This coming March 2023 DVMISSION 48 Hour Film Challenge will be celebrating its 18th birthday. This coming of age is an important moment for an event which started as a fun playful experiment and has grown, over the years, into a crucial date in the calendar for anyone working in film, video, and the wider creative sector in the Solent region.
On Tuesday 10th January DVMISSION founder and current Mission Coordinator Roy Hanney will be launching the #DVMISSION23 challenge at the monthly City Eye Film Network event in Southampton. Not only is this a great opportunity to learn more about what taking part in the challenge is all about. There will also be lots of networking with other local filmmakers and creatives.
If you don’t know what a 48 hour film challenge is, it’s like a film race: you get 48 hours to make a 2 minute short film. Plus, you need to include a line of dialogue, a title, and a genre in your film; what the organisers refer to as the obstructions. This is what is known as a pedagogy of constraint in that the organisers are going to try and make it hard for you to make your film so that you, the filmmaker, have to really stretch yourself creatively.
Don’t get the wrong idea, it is a challenge, but it is also great fun and teams keep coming back year after year. In fact, pretty much all the filmmakers living around the Solent region have taken part at some point in the last 18 years. Many will cite DVMISSION as catalyst for where they are now, and that, is another good reason to take part – this could be the start of your filmmaking career. While for those of you who are already more experienced, how often do you get the chance to be really creative and push the boundaries of your practice?
Then of course there is the gala screening and awards night, an immersive extravaganza that has been described as The Sex Pistols meets the Oscars, and at which our hand-crafted awards, The Pompey Oscars, will be given out in 14 categories. Imagine 30 teams of filmmakers having a wrap party at the same time and you will get a sense of the night. Once the films and screened and the awards are presented there is always the legendary after-party for some essential networking.
So, get down to City Eye on Tuesday 10th January and join us for the launch event and meet up with some potential collaborators. We will be giving away discount codes for anyone who signs up at the event, so this is definitely not to be missed.
